My wife @kristirauckis traveled to the Andes of Peru to trek the Salkantay trail to Machu Picchu and then to trek the lesser known Ausungate Trek around Cusco's sacred Ausungate mountain. In total we hiked about 85 miles through rugged and beautiful mountain terrain that challenged us. Of all the backpacking gear we brought, some was great, some, not so much.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but the video title is misleading. Weight does matter, but is should not be the only consideration. I try to balance comfort, function and weight in making my gear selections. As Andrew Skurka said, you can be Stupid Light.

Completely agree with you, Eric. Since I bought my 1st Deuter backpack (the weight is around 2-2.5 kg), I would never have exchanged it for a lighter one. Some people around me get terrified on learning how heavy it is but I do not care 🙂

hey I am about to go trippin almost all summer in Canada with a camp called Camp Wabun. Anyways I am deciding either between theBig Agnes Rapide SL or the Zenbivy Light Mattress. We will we going on two differnet trips, the first being 10 days and the second being about 32 days. The way we store our sleeping pads is we first have a tarp on the bottom and going up we have the pad, sleeping bag, and our clothes ontop, we then role the tarp and but it in a dry bag which goes in a duffle for portaging. It would mean a lot if you could suggest which one is best. I have also seen that the Zenbivy has had some reviews saying it punctures easily. Thank you!

Beautiful photography, immature chat.... "This is my show", "Eric fell down and I saw it" too much poop talk, your fall wasn't exciting as my fall ----- and honestly -- where is your hiking stick (with rubber tips of course,) - laugh about it, but if you had broken an ankle it would not have been funny. I have a great sense of humor but I don't find your giggling chat funny and very disappointed about the pedestrian chat going back and forth in a most beautiful area that deserves better. By the way so-called "influencers" are a dime a dozen..... I would have loved to have seen an intelligent show about this canyon... C'est la vie!!!! PS - where are you gaiters walking through the muck and a trekking pole???? PPS - three people should plan one meal together. Three stove burning together. Don't talk to me about global climate change..... pps - beautiful camping spots

After 35 years of backpacking and mountaineering I can assure you that there is no such thing as gear that is perfect for every situation. What works for a summer overnighter in well watered mountains is not what works for a multi season through hike nor will either work for desert hiking where there is zero water, and toting glacier gear for three weeks on Denali is a different set of gear altogether. Pick what works for you for the conditions you are going into. I currently have two sizes of ultralight backpacks, both from Durston, two sizes of heavy packs, an Osprey and an old Dana Designs that still works after 20+ years. At least 7 or 8 shelter systems (tents, tarps, bivies, hammocks) and the skills to use a plastic tarp or a bedsheet if I have to. Etcetera for all the other gear. Just remember that what people recommend is what works for them, not you. Hike your own hike, be safe, learn from everyone and especially from your own experience.

Random thoughts from an old timer Zenbivy user: I have their first (?) version of the light bed from their Indigogo campaign back in 2018 (quilt and sheet, 25° down, freebie pillow). For years I’ve been requesting a summer/warmer version of the sheet. It’s really interesting to see how they’ve changed and grown. There are elements bout the system that I am all about and full support, and some that are really disappointing. The main disappointment is that while super lofty all the loft seems to be misplaced in corner baffles. The main body warmth baffles have very little down to them, right from arrival. Seriously, you shine a light and there is little to no down in the main body baffles and the corners and sides have all of it. Truly disappointing. The design and concept has always been spot on. But I’ve also been afraid to upgrade because of that lack of down where it matters. Especially now that I want to convert my sleep system to a wider one, not to mention cooler. But I am a dancer and therefor need room to sleep. Why I love them so much. Now they have lighter, summer/un-insulated versions, and it’s still a little disappointing. I personally want a full length sheet. My feet and legs get dirty, I want my mattress pad protected from fort and oils. I want the hood to be super basic to simply hold the pillow in place or to not exist at all and to have that snap system…but to still be full length. Their original pillow was nothing of worth -sorry- It sits in the back of my closet and I use my S2S. But I am curious about the new version. Why is it white?! Seriously, why?! There is nothing good about a white sleep system. It shows all the dirt, it has no rescue purpose - if you’re trying to survive in snow waiting for SAR you are camouflaged and screwed. ‘You’ wanna be incognito? Why? What are you hiding from? No. Give me color so my quilt can be used to flag down SAR or signal for help if need be. As a solo female backpacker, that is important. But I gotta say, with that see through white tent…it does kinda camouflage you, which would be safe from humans???One last point is that with the original fabric they used, I was skeptical about it feeling like a trash bag, but it is the softest gear I have! Only down side is that any amount of an incline and ima sliden. Sliden right off my mattress pad. Has that changed at all?

I agree in general. Take enough stuff and if you backpack every month yo won't notice the weight, although a lighter tent is definitely less comfortable in 50 mile an hour winds.

Its a little pricey for my wallet, but I do have three Zenbivys. The Light, the Zippered Zen, and the Core. I love this sleep system and bought all three during sales at a great price. I'm fixing to order the universal 30" sheet so I can use any of these in my Haven Tent hammock. It's a great system and Zenbivy has several sales throughout the year. There's one going on this week 25% off.

I don't get it... why talk about a backpack without discussing the belt and how it carries with more weight? You don't need much of a pack to carry 25 pounds. Put 35 lbs in this and the Kakwa, _then_ tell us which is more comfortable, please. You're (almost) the only UA-camr who knows about carrying weight... it's weird when you don't do it.

35 years ago, I packed everything I owned & traveled over 2,000 miles, ending up just west of the Superstitions. I’d never visited there, or been anywhere remotely close, but I wanted my college years to be a much different experience than the first shitty 18 years of my life & I figured a good way to start was literally in a much different environment than the dreary and drab northeast gave me. It was the best decision of my life. Being surrounded by the beauty of Arizona helped me start a new, better life for myself. I was there for 31 years before Covid, and, as an only child, the responsibility of taking care of a sick parent made me have to leave. And I’ve missed it every day since. So… your video of both your Canyon excursion, and especially your Superstition hike (that I’ve done countless times myself), might’ve made my heartsick with nostalgia, but it truly made my night happy. And then to top it off unexpectedly with the gorillas in Rwanda…. Just wow. So I subscribed & I’m very much looking forward to going through more of your videos. All the best & again… Thank You 🙏 ✌️

My first backpacking stove weighed 1kg (2.2lbs) without any fuel. Back then I did not carry a water filter. I carried all the water I would need for the entire trip. Often 5 - 10 Liters. My sleeping bag weighed 2kg (4.4lbs) and my tent 4kg (8.8lbs). A fully packed bag with food for one or two nights out would weigh about 30kg. Because that's what I had. I had no money so all gear was borrowed and likely from the 70's. But that's fine. It got neither comfort or light weight with the gear I had back then. But I did get experience. My last trip was at 16kg total for everything including food and water for 5 days and I still think I would have a better experience if that was 13kg instead. I don't know what the "base weight" was because I don't measure base weight because I think food and water counts towards how angry my feet are at the end of the day

Why???????????????? Do you not have anything better to do. Too many egotistical holier-than-thou backpackers who are equipment elitists. I was hoping for at least one laugh, but I fail to see anything humorous in this.... My pillow is better than your pillow..... Pre-teenage fart jokes -- so funny -NOT!!!!!!!! Pre-teenage poop-bag jokes - even less funny.... You lost me when you decided to tell us that you didn't poop today.... and you are carrying your own poop.... Honestly, how many people actually do not carry out their poop and bury it instead. I think 99.9 percent of the people will not carry out their poop but secretly bury it, with a smile.... And all the oooooohs and ahhhhhs and Whoooooooas just make me want to go back to my heavy Boy Scout backpacking gear that weighed 60 pounds...... All ultralight gear is bougie..... Goodbye!!! PS - My four sleeping bags are lightweight, can serve as quilts if I like and cost me between $80 and $200 and keeps me warm in the temps I need. PPS - It's a good thing you can laugh at one another... I hope you don't take yourselves too seriously....

I’d love to see your work on an earth ship and the woodworking. Super useful.

The Bridger series of packs from Mystery Ranch are such a secret weapon and they are so slept on. Such a good pack design.

Definitely matters to me with my laundry list of accumulated injuries and health issues. It makes a huge difference. If it doesn’t matter to you now, just wait and see after a few decades of wear-and-tear, injuries, and surgeries. It was easy to storm up and down mountains with a 50-70lb pack when in my twenties.

I’m so waiting on videos of the hike & camping. I hope this means when we see the video it’s your same quality of beauty & experience w/out talking any gear. Unlike all these comment, I hate gear reviews but before purchasing will watch. Like I need a pillow for my husband so I watched that & on the water purifier. But mostly I like beautiful hikes & camping. I’m really picky (It’s my time) I don’t watch most popular UA-camrs. Dan Becker - reviews galore, Miranda Goes Outside - please don’t, shits & giggles, Kyle Hates Hiking - Then stop making a living off of it & all those click bates……..Please you be you & love Kristie

Thanks Eric, I appreciate & agree with your opinion on pack weight & comfort. The hiking public is constantly being sold to on having "ultra light" packs at very premium prices. Agree also that ultra light is good in many other areas. With packs I just haven't found it to be the case. My traditional 5+ pound backpack is simply more carry comfortable than the ultralight packs I've tried. I will continue to try them but certainty not going to obsess over having the latest ultralight pack trend. I hike & enjoy more miles when comfortable. I'll trim weight elsewhere. Best Always.....Bob V

Great to hear Kristi’s perspective on the gear she used. More of that in the future, please!

Eric, thanks for sharing all of your gear and thoughts about each one. In the air pillow catagory I have both the OV large pillow and the Trekology Aluft 2.0. I think the Trekology is a more comfortable/supportive pillow.
